The 2026 Memory Shortage and What It Did to AI Hardware Prices
Local AI hardware cost more in October 2026 than it did a year earlier, on every platform. The cause is memory. AI datacenter demand drove a global shortage of DRAM and NAND through 2026, and machines for local AI are mostly memory. This post sets out what happened and what it means for a business buying now. Every figure carries its date, and figures from a single outlet are marked as reported.
What happened to Apple
- March 2026: Apple stopped selling the 512 GB Mac Studio M3 Ultra.
- By May 2026: the M3 Ultra was available with 96 GB only, and the Mac mini lost its 32 GB and 64 GB options.
- Apple's Q2 2026 earnings call: Tim Cook said Mac mini and Mac Studio supply would stay tight for months.
- June 25, 2026: Apple raised prices across several Mac lines.
- August 25, 2026: Apple announced the new Mac mini and Mac Studio, on sale September 22.
The base Mac mini shows the effect: $599 for the M4 in 2024, $799 after the June increase, and $899 for the new M6. The new Mac Studio M5 Ultra brings 512 GB back, from late October 2026 at a price Apple has not published, on a higher floor: the M5 Ultra starts at $5,499, against $3,999 for the M3 Ultra at its launch.
Prices as of October 2026 (Apple US retail): Mac mini M6 from $899, Mac mini M5 Pro from $1,699, Mac Studio M5 Max from $2,499, Mac Studio M5 Ultra from $5,499.
What happened to NVIDIA and AMD
Prices on non-Apple AI hardware moved more, and moved monthly.
| Hardware | Launch price | Later price |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DGX Spark, 128 GB | $3,999 (October 2025) | $4,699 after NVIDIA's February 23, 2026 increase, which cited memory supply; about $6,950 in early October 2026 (reported) |
| NVIDIA RTX 5090 | $1,999 list | about $4,300 to $4,800 street, August to September 2026 (reported) |
| NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell | about $8,565 | $16,000 US list as of September 2026 (reported) |
| AMD Strix Halo systems, 128 GB | near $1,999 (Framework Desktop, 2025) | roughly $3,000 to $3,450 street in mid-2026, with frequent stockouts (reported) |
| AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 | about $1,299 | $1,299 to $1,900 (reported) |
NVIDIA announced a 64 GB DGX Spark at $4,999 on October 2, 2026, shipping October 23 (reported). Street prices are reported figures from single outlets; treat them as ranges, not quotes.
What it means if you are buying
Prices are dated, so quotes should be too. We quote hardware at Apple retail on the day you order. A price from a few months ago, including in older posts on this blog, may no longer exist.
We pass prices through as they are. We never mark up hardware. When Apple's price rises, yours rises by the same amount and no more. When it falls, so does yours.
Memory is where the shortage bites, so size it carefully. Buy the memory your model needs plus one tier of headroom, not more. Our sizing guide shows the arithmetic, and the model guide shows which model fits which tier.
No one has published when this ends. As of Apple's Q2 2026 earnings call, supply was expected to stay tight for months. We do not forecast hardware prices.
The cost case for local AI moved too. Higher hardware prices lengthen the payback period against cloud AI. Our cost comparison uses October 2026 prices and shows where local still pays back and where cloud is cheaper.
Key takeaways
- AI datacenter demand drove a global memory shortage through 2026, and local AI hardware is mostly memory.
- The base Mac mini went from $599 (2024) to $899 (M6, October 2026). Apple raised prices on June 25, 2026.
- The DGX Spark went from $3,999 at launch to about $6,950 by early October 2026 (reported). Graphics cards rose further on the street.
- We quote at the time of order and never mark up hardware, so price changes pass through exactly.
- No end date has been published. Size memory carefully and buy one tier of headroom, not more.
